In 1904 the U.S. Army adapted early Cadillac models to carry guns but it was not until General Pershing began using it as a command car during skirmishes in Texas and Mexico just prior to WWI that the Army begin to seriously consider Cadillacs for military purposes.

Cadillac built more than 2,500 Type 57s in 1918 specifically for use by officers in the American Expeditionary Forces. These Cadillacs (all designated as military vehicles by the M in their serial numbers) were equipped with the lauded 70-hp 314-cu.in. V-8. Nearly 2,100 of them went to France with the remainder sent to U.S. bases and to Canada. after the war most were disposed of at near-scrap values in Europe. This car was issued to the Louisiana National Guard in 1921 and is believed to have carried General Pershing - driven by Jerry (Jeremiah) Schultz - during his 1920 visit to Jackson Barracks. Mr, Schultz's grandson, Randy Dyess, relates that his grandfather proudly claimed to have driven General Pershing in the Cadillac that is now displayed at the Museum.
