Stroud Tower

Northwest Tower 1930s

In addition to the 2nd story rifle loopholes and 3rd story crenellation which served as firing positions, this tower displays artillery embrasures at ground level. Like the East Tower, this building is now used as VIP guest housing.

Ansel M “Buddy” Stroud was the 47th adjutant general of Louisiana, appointed by Governor David Treen in 1980. He served several governors through 1997, overseeing many changes of the National Guard at the national and state level.

According to Gibsen’s City Directory of 1838, the 2 buildings next to the tower served as the first post hospitals.  By 1870, the one on the west housed the ordnance sergeant and the hospital steward and the one on the right became married soldier’s quarters.
